DXA SCAN / Bone Mineral Density Testing (BMD)

Your Bone Mineral Density is important to us here at SunValley Arthritis Center; we can measure your Bone Mineral Density right here in our office with our own DXA equipment. Bone Mineral Density Testing or DXA Scan is an examination to determine if your bones are at risk for Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become frail and more likely to fracture. Because Osteoporosis is a silent disease, serial DXA scans can determine and trend your bone health. The DXA Scanner uses X-ray energy at very low levels and is not harmful to you. The usual areas to scan are the lumbar spine and both hips.

Your BMD is an essential part of your treatment program. Both men and women are candidates for measurements; many lifestyle factors place you at risk and can affect your bone health. By tracking changes in your Bone Density your Doctor can better manage your personalized treatment plan and can decide your test frequency.

As you continue serial BMD measurements, your scores assist our Doctors in making decisions about your bone health. By offering testing here in the office, we have immediate access to all your DXA information, prior and current results. The testing is noninvasive, quick, and generally takes less than 30 minutes. We also are able to conduct DXA testing on individuals that are not established patients here at SunValley Arthritis Center. The test results are mailed to your primary care physician or your referring physician.

Our equipment (GE Lunar) and technologist, Olga Peacock, BS, RT, BD, CBDT are registered and certified with the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. We calibrate the equipment regularly and participate in many osteoporosis clinical study programs, working to improve bone loss detection and treatment. Therefore we can always assure you that your acquisition, and your analysis are always performed with precision and accuracy.

Upon your DXA visit, you will be filling out a DXA History form. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. We ask that you wear clothing without belts, zippers, shell buttons, or underwire bra. These garments overlay the areas that will be examined and interfere with the density outcome.
